Make Something for Mom!

Handmade Gifts Are Better Than Store-Bought Gifts
By: Sofia W., Ben G., Bailey F. of 5E

What are you getting your mom for Mother’s Day? Is it store-bought or handmade?  Personally, we think that handmade gifts are better than store-bought gifts. Read this article to find out more.
One reason we think handmade gifts are better than store bought gifts is because it’s more special when you make it yourself; when you make it yourself it's one-of-a-kind. Another reason why handmade gifts are better than store bought gifts is because store bought gifts cost money; handmade gifts are nicer and they don't cost money.   When we make something it makes us feel accomplished because we worked so hard to make something nice for our mother.  What are you going to make for your mother?

Here are 5 project ideas from our Art Room:

Yearbook Self-Portraits

For the past two weeks, we have been working on the year book self-portraits. Some materials used to make the portraits are oil pastel, crayons, and markers, sharpies to outline, and pencil to sketch. First, we sketched out what our portrait would look like. Then, we filled in the face with a peach colored crayon. Next, we made the eyes, mouth, and nose. Following that, we drew out the hairline so it would actually look like us. Moving on, we colored the shoulder. After that, we outlined the head and shoulders in sharpie. Finally, we made a design in the open space. That’s how we made our yearbook self-portrait.

CD Cover Designs

By Alexandra G.

Making a CD at Purchase Elementary School is always a big deal. I have only been in this school since the country theme CD, but I know how well the CDs were before I came. Some of the past CD themes were 80’s, Rock through the Ages, Beatles, Songs at the Cinema, Friendship & Love, and Michael Jackson. Because we have done 10 CD’s before, this year’s theme is “Best of Purchase”. The CDs have to do with art and music because every year Ms. Palefsky asks students to draw the CD front cover and back cover. Also, Ms. Battista, our music teacher, gives every student a chance to have a spotlight moment because there are solos for students who want solos. This year I am graduating so this is a special CD for me and other 5th graders.
