Yearbook Artwork

By Ava J, 5E

“Self portraits rock!” my class said, after Ms. Palefsky announced that the next unit in art class was making our own self-portraits for the yearbook. First, Ms. Palefsky showed us famous artists that made outstanding self-portraits, those artists were… Frida Kahlo, Picasso, Van Gogh, and Chagall.  After that it was time to get started. Ms. Palefsky did step-by-step, and taught us "eyes by the ears" and many more fantastic drawing tricks. Within the next few classes our self-portraits had gotten better and better, looking more realistic every time. By now Ms. Palefsky had put up advanced eyes, nose and mouth photos to give us options for which ones we wanted to choose. This unit was taking a very long time, but soon enough my whole class was done with all the steps, they were colored and everything! Ms. Palefsky was sooo impressed with how our faces were in proportion, it was amazing! Although it was a long unit the result was great. I had an awesome time and so did the rest of fifth grade. Self-portraits are an amazing art project!

Proportions of Human Head

Leonardo da Vinci is famous for his careful
study of proportions in Vitruvian Man (circa 1487).

  2. Right on, Reed!

Vincent van Gogh painted over 30 self-portraits between 1886 and 1889... he was busy. Maybe you'll make your plaster mask into a self-portrait? Thanks for these excellent comments.
